-> Oh yes, you have to think twice before you try to install Linux on your branded PC because some vendors have a Linux policy to not validate any warranty if you install Linux OS.
This just happened in London when a guy who has an Acer Aspire 9301AWSMi with a 17" display and is powered by a single-core AMD Turion processor notebook went to the vendor store and denied him a repair request on a physical defect.
He took his five month old notebook back to the same retail store he bought it from for warranty repairs, he expected it to be fixed promptly. Purchased with cash on March 29, the notebook came with the standard one-year manufacturer’s warranty which included hardware. It originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium installed, though he’s now installed Sabayon/Gentoo.
He was having a problem with the screen’s left hinge. It was broken internally and a small crack has formed in the case. He owned a similar notebook previously with the same problem. The defect caused the crack to grow to the point where it eventually caused his notebook to completely fail.

-> When troubleshooting any version of Windows, learning what applications and processes are loading on startup is a critical step. To this end, the old and faithful MSCONFIG application is a great help, and it’s definitely present in Windows Vista too. Just go Start, Run, MSCONFIG and you’re there.
But now there is a new tool utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.
Autoruns’ Hide Signed Microsoft Entries option helps you to zoom in on third-party auto-starting images that have been added to your system and it has support for looking at the auto-starting images configured for other

The new sidebar in Windows Vista provides the opportunity to run various gadgets. Windows Vista ships with a simple CPU and Memory usage gadget, however, there are many more gadgets out there that are much more useful and help you monitor almost every aspect of Windows and your PC.
System Control
System Control is much more than your average shutdown gadget. Aside from the normal Shutdown, Restart, Lock, and Sleep / Hibernate, we give you Switch User, Log Off, Task Manager, Run Window, and Command Prompt. All of those buttons can be re-ordered or disabled / enabled.
Application Launcher
You can add applications to the Launcher by Dragging and Dropping or use settings. In settings you can reorder the applications using the arrows, add or delete them. You can drag and drop folders or drives from My Computer.

There is a great little utility in Windows called the start command. This DOS command allows you to start any process with advanced settings. In Windows Vista it is perfect if you want to start an application and tell windows to only run it on one CPU and at a high priority level.
For example, let’s say that you want to start Microsoft Paint and have it run on your second CPU core at Above Normal priority. The command below will accomplish this:
start /affinity 2 /abovenormal mspaint.exe
You can customize the command above and replace the 2 with the processor number (in hex) that you want the processor to run on. You can also adjust the priority level by using one of the flags below:
/Low /Normal /High /Realtime /Abovenormal /Belownormal
I hope this little tip will enhance your Windows Vista experience.
